In this first part of SEGMENT 12, we discuss the "Parade" era music.

Prince begins the "Parade" sessions in Spring 1985 in the midst of the "Around the World in a Day" album release and success of its singles.  During this time, Prince is not only recording an immense amount of new music for the "Under the Cherry Moon" movie and future projects, but also working with side groups The Family and Mazarati.  Prince is also exploring jazz fusion and experimenting with strings and orchestral forms.

The break up of The Family prompts Prince to shake up and expand The Revolution, adding new members.  Since Wendy and Lisa have emerged in this era as Prince's main collaborators, to the chagrin of Matt, Mark, and Bobby; the new editions to The Revolution are the catalyst for many internal fights and arguments between Wendy, Lisa, and Prince.  Prince's womanizing remains a problem for Susannah, and adds to the tension between Wendy and Lisa and Prince.  Also, Prince is not into crediting Wendy and Lisa for their contributions, forcing them to contemplate leaving the band.  Mark Brown is still resentful of Prince's handling of his contributions to Prince's 1986 hit "Kiss" and the failure of his group Mazarati.

In the midst of all this drama, Prince music is dominating the charts as Prince prepares for the release of his second movie "Under the Cherry Moon".

We will continue our look at the "Parade" era in Pt 2 of SEGMENT 12.
