In this first part of SEGMENT 17, we pick up at the end of the "Nude Tour" where Mayte and Prince are staying in touch by phone and mail, and Mayte comes to Paisley Park to record and "hang out" with Prince.  Prince fires Stiefel and Phillips management, and seeks management from within his inner circle.  Prince is creating new music with his new band The New Power Generation collaboratively, from the ground up and becomes influenced by the popular rap music that is topping the charts.  Prince and former managers Cavallo, Ruffalo, and Fargnoli all sue each other, and Fargnoli's artist Sinead O'Connor reports that she was assaulted by Prince to the media.

Prince is ready for a hit, and intentionally sets out to make a mainstream, commercial record.  Prince collaborates with Kate Bush with mixed results. There is a blow-up between Prince and Ingrid Chavez around her debut album, and Prince juggles various projects with his assorted female proteges. Prince promotes "Diamonds and Pearls" heavily well ahead of its release and pulls off some legendary Prince performances on national television.

As usual, the episode contains numerous live concert and television footage as well as rare interviews with Prince’s band members and studio staff.
