SEGMENT 19 is the last segment of this PART 4 of “The Ritualistic Life and Murder of Prince” series, that will wrap up the first “19” year cycle of Prince’s life and career in the music business. I did not plan for the first “19” years of Prince’s life in the music business to fit so neatly into the “19” SEGMENTS of Part 4, but I think “someone” did.
There will be one more part of SEGMENT 19, Pt.4; that will take us up to 1996. Then, Part 5 SEGMENT 1 will open in 1996, Prince free of the contract and newly married. Part 5 of the series will explore the last “19” year cycle of Prince’s career and in his spiritual journey: 1997-2016.
Prince in 1995
In this episode: We pick up in January 1995, where Prince is presented with the prestigious "Award of Merit" and is asked to perform at the 22nd American Music Awards, again another example of a Prince coded event (22=Prince), where Prince is the star of the evening.
Prince & The New Power Generation performed the "Purple Medley" live along with 50 dancers (Carmen Electra included) from Prince's "Glam Slam" club.
Throughout the series, I have taught viewers how you can often tell who is the “star of the night” at these award shows and other major events, if you know how to decode with Gematria. And in relation to Prince, knowledge of the "Prince Numbers" is absolutely necessary to catch these coded "Prince events" throughout Prince's life. This Prince appearance was another of these instances.
After Prince’s performance at the 22nd American Music Awards, he is asked to participate in the 10 year anniversary performance of "We Are the World", that Prince famously refused to participate in after the AMAs in 1985. We talked about the scandal that followed, one of the most damaging of Prince’s career in “SEGMENT 9 (Pt.3) The Purple Rain Music” of “The Ritualistic Life and Murder of Prince” series.
But in 1995, this ploy to get Prince to sing on “We Are the World” didn't work, and despite Prince standing in the middle of the crowd of swaying and singing celebrities, and Quincy Jones coaxing Prince to sing, Prince has still NOT sung on “We Are the World”.
Prince's Finances are nationwide news
News of Prince's financial problems become national news as the result of an investigative article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press titled “Purple Drain”, and many in the Twin Cities who claimed to have been stiffed on payments by Paisley Park come out of the woodwork to tell their stories. We take a look at some local and national news stories from 1995, that illustrate numerous tales of Prince’s financial perils, and are left wondering: “Why now?” Why at the peak of the dispute and battle with WB Records, are Prince’s finances under such scrutiny?
We discussed in the last episode, SEGMENT 19(Pt.2) "The Fight for Freedom Continues 1994-1995" how this is what often happens in the music business and in the entertainment business in general. When an artist begins to "buck the system", go against the evil "system", or break the oppressive "chains" placed upon them; the "masters" retaliate. They mess with your money, your reputation, or devise situations where you wind up in court or jail, or murder you among other things. This is to silence you or remove you from the public eye, so that you can't bring down the veil of illusion for the masses.
This is why Prince's finances are so "In flux" right now, and why Warner Brothers is holding back on releasing "The Gold Experience" album. They are punishing Prince for speaking out publicly in the media with SLAVE on his face.
Prince publicly fights to get "The Gold Experience" album released
Meanwhile, Prince is mainly concerned with getting the "The Gold Experience" album released, and begins negotiating with WB Records for the release of "The Gold Experience" and "Exodus" by The NPG...with SLAVE on his face. Prince and newly appointed Chairman and CEO of WB Records, Danny Goldberg, engage in a series of meetings to negotiate the release of these two new albums. Negotiations don't go well, and Prince continues to ignore the "Come" album, instead promoting the unreleased "Gold Experience" music. Prince has been badmouthing Warner Brothers for the last 2 years, and angry about the delays in releasing his work, ramps up his efforts giving an unprecedented number of interviews at this time with...SLAVE on his face. .
The "Ultimate Live Experience" Tour of Europe, March 1995
Under financial pressures, Prince then plans the ill fated "Ultimate Live Experience" Tour of Europe, to disastrous results. Ticket sales are extremely slow, since Prince lost a portion of his fan base, when he ventured into “gangsta rap” in the early 1990s (SEGMENT 17: “Diamonds and Pearls”( Pt.2)). Prince hires and fires several sound engineers on the tour, and just decides to run the sound himself, during the shows!! This led to terrible imbalances in sound and European audiences walk out on the shows. Unfortunately, Prince’s over 10 year love affair with Europe seems to have ended with the “Ultimate Live Experience” Tour of 1995.
Prince was performing the unreleased “Gold Experience” songs, and the audiences found it hard to tolerate these shows of unknown new material. The huge stage set, The "Endorphinmachine" proves an expensive problem, and Prince decides to leave large portions of the set behind as the tour progresses. This leads to even more stage mishaps, as Prince and his band struggle to get used to these changes. By the end of the tour, Prince seems to have spent more money than he took in.
The "Exodus" album and "Tora Tora"
During the European tour, The NPG’s 2nd album, “Exodus” is released independently by Prince on his NPG Records label. “Exodus” and its 3 singles are only released in Europe, since Warner Brothers blocked release in the USA. Prince’s latest alter ego “Tora Tora” is born, to conceal his involvement in the “Exodus” album, and Prince begins performing the “Exodus” songs with his head covered, and without speaking. But “Exodus” does pretty well on the European charts, though the album is panned in the US.
Throughout the tour and his time in Europe, Prince maintains that "Prince is dead" and has been reborn as "Love Symbol". However, all this just angers WB further and the "Gold Experience" is put on hold again by the label.
